What is a Harp?

A harp is a musical instrument with plucked strings that is usually triangular in shape. The way the strings interact with the soundboard (the hole) in the harp’s body is another distinguishing feature. While the strings on guitars and violins run parallel to the soundboard, the strings on harps always run perpendicular to the soundboard.

Harps were popular in Egypt as early as 1500 BC, and they may have been present in Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq) as early as 2500 BC, according to history. Harps are visually appealing instruments that frequently remind listeners of the instruments that angels are said to enjoy playing in heaven. Harps typically range in height from two to six feet (60 to 180 cm) and have between 22 and 47 strings. Some smaller harps can be held in the player’s lap, but the majority of models are designed to stand on the floor. The modern harmonica is often referred to as the “blues harp.” Electric harps are also available, though they are typically acoustic.

Harps are a common musical instrument in orchestras all over the world. Harpists can be found performing solo at wedding receptions and other events, and the electric harp has made an appearance on stage with various rock and blues bands.

To play the harp, move your fingers across the strings to make different sounds. The music created when the strings are strummed or plucked can range from somber tunes that evoke melancholy feelings to racy melodies that inspire. Many harps have foot pedals that the harpist uses in the same way a pianist does to provide a wider range of sounds.

Alfonse Hasslemans, a French harpist who lived from 1845 to 1912, is credited with reviving the harp at the turn of the century. Harpo Marx, the mute brother of the famous comedy group the Marx Brothers, made many viewers laugh with his ridiculous antics in old black and white Marx Brothers films. Harpo was also a talented harpist who could almost always be found playing the harp in a movie. Harpo also performed in front of Russian and English heads of state. Harpo Marx is the world’s most famous harpist, despite the fact that he has been dead for many years.
