What Is a Metal Clarinet?

A metal clarinet is a type of woodwind instrument that is made entirely or partially of metal. Early in the twentieth century, these designs were popular, but by the end of the century, other materials had become more popular. Metal clarinets are now mostly antiques that are traded for their collectible value, but some are still made of metal or have metal parts.

Clarinets can be made out of a variety of materials. Some of the items are made of wood. Others are constructed from “plastic resins.” Because of its lower cost of production and durability, the hard plastic clarinet has become a popular alternative. Plastic resins are commonly used in other woodwinds, such as the simple recorder found in many elementary schools.

Metal plating may be used over other materials on some higher-end clarinets. African hardwoods and other woods like boxwood are used to make some of the most valuable clarinets. Some are made of ivory as well, though this is uncommon.

Today’s musicians believe that an entirely metal clarinet does not always produce a good, resonant sound. Metal clarinets have a reputation for producing a “tinny” sound. Others criticize the excessively thin construction of some metal clarinets. Many models of metal clarinets are thinner than those made of other materials.

The mouthpiece of the clarinet, like the body of the instrument, can be made of a variety of materials. Many of the materials used to make the mouthpiece are also used to make the rest of the instrument. As previously mentioned, these materials include plastic resins, metal, wood, and ivory. Softer rubber can also be used to make mouthpieces.

Some musicians believe that the mouthpiece is what distinguishes a clarinet’s tone. A metal mouthpiece, for example, could change the sound that comes out of the instrument, making it too nasal for some musicians. In general, musicians devote a significant amount of time and effort to selecting mouthpieces that can be used with any instrument if they are compatible.

Many of the metal clarinet models currently on the market are the subject of heated debate about their worth and utility. Some argue that these instruments have low online auction values because they are of poor quality. Others continue to collect metal clarinets, either for musical purposes or as collectibles.
