Dropping a course on request is a term used in academia to describe the decision to remove a course from one’s course load. In some colleges and universities, a drop on request is abbreviated as DOR. When requesting to drop a class, a form is usually required, and deadline dates are usually in effect.
If a drop-on-request deadline is not met, the student may be charged a fee for withdrawing from a class. Dropping a class differs from withdrawing from one in that dropping a course occurs before the registration deadline, whereas withdrawing from a course occurs after the registration deadline. A drop on request that is received by the deadline is usually not noted on the official transcript, whereas a withdrawal is usually marked with a W.
Before requesting to drop a course, a student should make sure that doing so will not have an impact on their academic record. It’s possible that the course will be required as a prerequisite in a future semester, and it won’t be offered again. Some financial aid and/or scholarship plans do not allow students to drop courses on their own. Even if a drop-in request is permitted, failing to submit the request form by the deadline will result in a F on the transcript. This grade may have an impact on your academic record and financial aid.
When a student requests a drop on, he or she should submit the required form as soon as possible before the registration deadline. A copy of the form should be kept by the student in case there are any discrepancies with scholarship or funding sources. A drop-on request form at a college or university may require the student to provide a reason for wanting to drop the course.
