Esthetics jobs are those that fall under the categories of beauty, personal care, grooming, or cosmetology. Hair stylists, barbers, skin technicians, nail and pedicure technicians, and spa treatment providers such as massage and aromatherapy fall into this category. Although there are many different types of esthetics jobs, they all fall into one of the following categories: hair, skin, nails, and spa treatments.
Hair
Hair stylists and barbers are two examples of esthetics jobs that fall under the hair category. Hair stylists are people who wash, color, cut, and style people’s hair. Barbers mostly work on men, washing, cutting, and styling their hair as well as shaving and grooming their beards and facial hair. Cutting, coloring, perming, and styling are some of the specialties of hair stylists. Some hair stylists work in salons, others from home, and still others travel to different locations to provide services to models, actors, and television personalities. To enhance the styling experience, some hair stylists and barbers may extend traditional services to include massage and other relaxation techniques.
Skin
Giving facials, removing unwanted hair, and providing other treatments to combat dry or oily skin are typical esthetics jobs in skincare. A skincare specialist can work in a salon or spa, a dermatologist’s office, or run their own business. Laser hair removal is now one of the most popular hair removal treatments, so it’s an especially good area to pursue. Licensed paramedical estheticians are skincare technicians who work for dermatologists or plastic surgeons. Patients undergoing surgery are cared for by licensed paramedical estheticians both before and after the procedure.
Nails
Another aspect of esthetics jobs is nail care. Manicures are the specialty of some, while pedicures are the specialty of others. A nail technician’s day might consist of giving manicures, applying fake nail tips, airbrushing designs onto fingernails or toenails, or performing pedicures. Nail technicians can work in a salon, spa, or even run their own business.
Treatments at the Spa
The broadest category of esthetics jobs is probably spa services. Spa estheticians may set clients up for mud bath treatments, use aromatherapy to relax or energize customers, use various massage techniques, apply hot stones, hydrate, detoxify, or any number of other treatments. Some estheticians provide these types of treatments as an extension of their main focus, such as hairstyling, while others specialize in them.
