After that, you’ll need to put together proof of your previous work experience. Alternatively, you may be able to take an exam that verifies your knowledge in a specific field in some cases.
Start speaking with an adviser at the college or university you want to attend about earning college credit for work experience. Check to see if the school considers prior work experience to be sufficient grounds for credit. Then double-check that your work history qualifies you for credit. In most cases, in order to earn credits, your work experience must be related to the degree you wish to pursue. For example, if you want to get a degree in hospitality services, you might be able to get credit for working as a restaurant manager or a hotel concierge.
Once you’ve determined that you’re eligible for college credit for work experience, you’ll need to gather evidence of that experience. Writing a detailed job description and obtaining letters from previous employers will most likely be required. You might be able to get college credit for your work experience if you pass an exam that verifies your knowledge of the field in which you previously worked. These tests, known as College-Level Examination Program® (CLEP) tests, are available in over 30 subject areas and are available at testing centers across the United States. You could take the marketing CLEP test if you previously worked in a marketing firm, for example. In most cases, if you pass the exam, you will be given credits equivalent to those earned in a semester-long class.
