What are the Different Types of Commercial Carpet?

Commercial flooring and carpeting are usually formulated to provide all the color and texture of any carpeting options used in the home, while still providing superior resistance to wear and tear. As with options with carpeting for the home, commercial carpet also offers a range of types that will fit well in all types of public buildings and workplaces. Here are some examples of the different types of commercial carpeting that are currently available.

Low density loop piles are easily one of the best options for commercial carpet in high traffic areas such as lobbies, classrooms, and various types of health care facilities. A low density loop pile does not have the plush qualities of other carpeting options, but the short pile resists crushing and matting better than just about any other option. The pile is also practical, in that it provides a relatively smooth surface that makes it much easier to handle rolling traffic, such as wheel chairs in hospitals, or supply carts in offices.

Tufted carpeting is another popular type of commercial carpet. Carpeting of this type is composed of multiple rows of pile yarn that is used to create the tufts. A tufted carpet is stitched rather than woven, with a backing added to help stabilize the tufts for long-term use of the carpeting. While having a pile that is slightly higher than low density loop designs, tuft carpets also hold up well to a lot of traffic and are especially good options for offices.

Woven carpeting can also be durable and stand up to a lot of wear and tear. With woven designs, the pile is still relatively short, but somewhat more plush than other commercial carpet options, especially in terms of the amount of cushioning the carpeting provides. Loomed carpeting of this type can easily last for ten years or more under a great deal of traffic. As with tufted carpeting, woven carpets are a good option for offices, conference rooms, and hotel rooms.

Commercial carpet of all types usually makes use of sturdy synthetic fibers that resist staining, tend to not crush with frequent foot traffic, and repel dirt. These qualities make it very simple to maintain the carpeting with nothing more than routine vacuuming and an occasional steam cleaning. Synthetic carpets may use one or more different fibers that are also color fast, making it much more difficult for the carpets to fade even when constantly exposed to direct sunlight.

As with home carpeting, commercial carpet is available in solid lengths or as carpet squares. One of the main advantages of using the squares is the ease of installation. Many people find the adhesive-backed squares can be put into place rapidly and require much less effort then the installation of wall to wall carpeting. In addition, it is possible to easily replace one or two carpet squares that have become damaged, rather than having to remove an entire carpet when one small area is stained or otherwise ruined.
