Drum major uniforms, whether for military or school bands, have a lot of similarities. The main components of virtually any drum major uniform are pants, a coat, and a hat. A whistle on a lanyard string and a baton are common accessories. The most common uniform colors are white or black, but school colors are also used. Drum major clothing often has details that are a different color or material than the main uniform, such as metallic sequins.
Sashes, shoulder embellishments, and piping trim in vibrant colors or materials add glamour and drama to drum major uniforms that are otherwise neutral in color. Because the drum major is the marching band’s leader and the first person the audience sees, these uniforms are usually designed to stand out from the rest of the group. White drum major uniforms frequently feature large silver or gold metallic pompom-like plumes on the hats, as well as a matching sequined sash. A drum major’s black or dark blue uniform is usually accented with white piping trim, such as on coat pocket flaps, button sections, and the side of pant legs.
Whistles and batons are common accessories that contrast with the drum major’s uniform color. Whistle covers, also known as guards, are available in a variety of primary colors and are designed to fit over metal whistles. Lanyard cords in similar colors, as well as black and white, can be mixed and matched with the guard to attach to the whistle, allowing the drum major to wear it around his or her neck. Tassels, which come in a variety of primary colors as well as black and white, are frequently used to dress up a plain baton to match different drum major uniforms.
Drum major pants are commonly referred to as bibber. These are typically made of durable fabric and often include overall suspenders as well as elasticized side sections for better fit. One or two pockets may be present on the pants.
Many drum major uniforms include a coat with long tails, similar to a formal dinner jacket. Bands or stripes on the sleeves of uniform jackets are common, as are military-style epaulettes or shoulder covers, which are usually quite decorative. A cape that fits over one shoulder is found on some uniform jackets.
Tassels, braiding, and unique visors may be added to the tall, cylindrical hats worn by drum majors, but a large metallic or feathery plume on top is a common dramatic feature. Drum major gloves, as well as the lower bands of cloth known as spats that are often worn around the ankles, are usually white. Although some uniforms call for tan or taupe footwear, drum major shoes are almost always black or white.
