What does a Film Critic do?

A film critic watches new releases and writes thoughtful reviews about everything from the acting to the pacing; from the plot to the character chemistry. After the film critic has formed an opinion about the movie, he or she must write a well-written and honest review that will be published in one or more publications. Some critics work for only one magazine or newspaper, while others work for multiple publications. A film critic may also give their opinion on a film on a website, television show, or trade publication.

It is not as glamorous or simple as it appears to be to become a film critic. A critic must be well-versed in many, if not all, aspects of filmmaking and production. Some critics have film studies degrees, allowing them to examine the filmmaking process as well as the common elements of plot and character development. Other critics may have studied literature, which can help them understand some of the common themes and styles in film. A film critic does not always require formal education; some critics are simply ardent film fans and, to some extent, film historians with the knowledge and analytical skills to present a clear and reliable portrayal of a specific film.

A film critic must be able to write well. The critic will frequently be required to watch several films in a single day, taking notes and writing accurate reviews of specific scenes from each film. Critics are frequently required to meet tight deadlines for multiple publications, which can be mentally draining. Keeping a clear head and maintaining objectivity while watching a film can be difficult or impossible at times, especially when the film critic is required to write a review of a film that features a writer, director, or actor whom he or she dislikes.

Since the invention of film, the number of media outlets available for film critics to present their work has grown. Websites have become one of the most popular places for film critics to publish their work, and while written articles are still popular, audio clips and short video clips have also become popular. A film critic must now be aware of various methods of delivering their materials to audiences and be willing and able to reach out to them in a variety of ways.
