The transport of large and heavy materials is coordinated a lift manager. They usually oversee the logistics of transporting oversize machinery and other large items land, air, and sea. To ensure safety and efficiency, responsibilities include measuring and coordinating cargo and communicating with lift workers and supervisors.
Lift managers are responsible for a variety of tasks related to the transportation of large cargo. The manager weighs and measures the cargo load to determine the available transportation options. A lift manager may also be in charge of overseeing the loading and unloading process. To reduce the number of accidents and injuries, many managers work directly with safety supervisors and inspectors.
Lift managers must be familiar with the capabilities and limitations of transportation equipment. When moving large items, the wrong crane or insufficiently strong straps can have disastrous and costly consequences. Many people in this position schedule pickup vehicles from privately contracted companies, such as trains, trucks, and planes. When problems arise with any of the machinery or parties involved in the transport operation, it is usually the lift manager’s responsibility to find a suitable solution.
In most cases, the lift manager determines how many employees are required for a heavy transport operation. Once the cargo details are known and the mode of transport is chosen, this decision is frequently made. Under the supervision of the lift manager, the machinery operators, drivers, and spotters work as a team. Many managers create a sequential plan or schedule that they can refer to throughout the operation. The unloading team is usually directed a second lift manager at the delivery location.
For this position, previous experience operating heavy machinery and transport vehicles is also required. This experience has given me a better understanding of the challenges that the team is up against. For lift managers tasked with selecting qualified personnel for hazardous heavy lifting operations, understanding the skills team members must possess is critical.
Effective lift managers can plan lifts efficiently, coordinate lift teams, and solve problems. Even if a company does not move large objects on a daily basis, a qualified lift manager should be on staff. Lift managers may also have other supervisory responsibilities within the organization. On a daily basis, job responsibilities may shift to include a variety of shipping and receiving logistics. Many lift managers are trained and hired from within the ranks of the company’s existing management.
Client relations is another area of responsibility for some in this position. It’s possible that the person in charge of the lift is to blame for any problems with a large item move. Complaints may arise if materials arrive broken or improperly packaged. Lift managers may be asked to work directly with the disgruntled customer to bring the transaction to a satisfactory conclusion.
