A maintenance assistant is critical to keeping a facility clean, safe, and functional. It is necessary to remove waste and place it in a dumpster for pickup in order to keep a facility clean, minimize odors, and comply with sanitary regulations. This is a task that is typically completed on a daily basis.
Another important job duty that is typically performed on a daily basis is keeping the floors clean. Sweeping and mopping hardwood or tile floors, as well as vacuuming carpeted floors, are typical tasks. This action clears debris from the floor and keeps it safe for other workers and the general public. In addition, a maintenance assistant may use a floor buffer to remove skid marks from non-carpeted floors on a regular basis.
Cleaning restrooms is another common job responsibility. Wiping down mirrors, mopping floors, restocking soap and toilet paper, and cleaning toilets and urinals are all examples of this action. This is a daily or twice-daily practice that is necessary for maintaining health and safety standards.
Another aspect of being a maintenance assistant is making necessary repairs as soon as possible. For example, if a bathroom has a plumbing problem, the assistant will be in charge of fixing it. If there are electrical problems at a facility, this person may work on the breaker box to resolve the problem. In some cases, he will work alone, while in others, he will collaborate with the maintenance supervisor. As a result, this position requires someone who is mechanically inclined and capable of resolving a variety of issues within a facility.
In addition, from time to time, a maintenance assistant is responsible for moving heavy equipment. If a desk needs to be moved from one room to another, for example, the maintenance assistant will use a hand truck or push cart. Because of the physical nature of the job, an individual must be in good physical condition and capable of doing some heavy lifting on occasion.
