What Does a Roofer Do?

A roofer performs roof repairs such as shingling older roofs and installing shingles on newly constructed structures. When the old roof must be removed before the new roof can be installed, a roofer’s job can be difficult. A roofer typically installs wood or tile shingles, metal roofs, and rubber roofs in addition to asphalt shingles. Roof workers do not need to be afraid of heights because their work often takes them several stories up in the air. Despite the fact that power nailing guns make the task of laying a roof much faster than the previous hammer and nail method, many companies still provide the standard hammer service as a quality control measure.

While most of these jobs are completed a roofing company’s roofer, work on a newly constructed building is typically completed the crew that also built the building. The typical commercial roofing project necessitates the use of a rubber roof. This usually necessitates the roofer removing the heavy rubber cover before removing the stone from the roof. The stone is placed on the rubber roof to help keep it from blowing away in high winds. All roof protrusions, such as vent pipes, air conditioning and heating units, as well as skylights, must be cut out of rubber sheeting.

The roofer’s job in some rubber roof repair jobs is to mop the entire roof with a coat of hot, melted tar. Before sweeping the roof clean, it must first be cleared of stones and other debris. After the tar has been removed, small patches of new rubber may be applied to the roof to seal any cracks or worn areas. The old roofing materials are typically removed down to the wooden roof materials before a base of fresh tar paper is laid down and secured with either nails or staples for tiles, shingles, and metal roofing.

Due to rot, a roofer may be required to replace the wood on the roof. This is usually made of plywood or particle board sheeting that is nailed to the rafters. Roofers cover the base wood with tar paper and then the shingles, tiles, or steel panels of a metal roof once it is safe and secure. To secure the roofing materials to the roof, power nailers in the form of air or electric nailing/stapling guns are used. For the additional control that the hammer provides the installer, some roofing companies prefer to use hammer and nail roofing rather than power nailing devices.
