A double wide mobile home is a pre-fabricated home, or trailer, that is twice as wide as standard or single wide mobile home. In most cases, a double wide mobile home is less than 90 feet long (about 27 meters) and more than 20 feet wide (about 6 meters). While a single wide mobile home is usually delivered in one single pre-fabricated unit, a double wide is usually delivered in two pieces that are connected on site. Although the term mobile home is used to describe these residences, it is a bit of a misnomer as many of these homes remain permanently fixed in place. While single wides can, in some cases, be easily moved from place to place, an assembled double wide is too wide to safely travel most roads.
The main reason that most people choose double wide mobile homes over single wide mobile homes is that the double wide offers a great deal more space. Some double wide designs include five bedrooms and three bathrooms in addition to a kitchen, living area, storage spaces, and space for utilities. Double wide floor plans vary quite a bit from model to model and from manufacturer to manufacturer. In many cases, customers have quite a bit of choice when it comes to their floor plans. There are some cases in which people can customize the floor plans of their double wides.
It is important to note that a double wide mobile home is not simply two single wide mobile homes that have been connected along one of the long sides of the structure. In many cases, the two sections are quite different in their layout and contents. One side of a double wide home may encompass a kitchen, two bathrooms, and a bedroom while the other side encompasses two bedrooms and a living room. Some double wides even include a porch area on one side.
The double wide mobile home model is not the only kind of mobile home that is an expanded version of the single wide. There are also triple wide mobile homes for people who are looking for even more space. In some cases, even more than three sections are joined together to make a larger mobile home. These kinds of mobile homes that incorporate three or more sections are much less common than double wides.
