What is a Flight Nurse?

A flight nurse is a registered nurse who provides medical care and assistance to patients and doctors on planes and helicopters. Before, during, and after the flight to a hospital or other facility that provides medical care or assistance, he is normally expected to keep the patient safe and secure. An airline, hospital, or private company may hire a flight nurse. He could also work as a freelancer.

A flight nurse is normally expected to review all of the patient’s medical records and consult with the attending physician for additional information before boarding the plane. Following this pre-flight procedure, he usually assesses what equipment and supplies are required and personally ensures that they are installed properly and completely on the aircraft. An oxygen tank, IV medications and supplements, oral medications, and airway management equipment are common medical items.

Once the plane is in the air, a flight nurse is expected to be familiar with the unique requirements of patient air transport. His abilities should include the ability to solve problems unique to aeromedical care, such as emergency stabilization and adverse reactions to pressurized environments. It is usually necessary to have a basic understanding of aircraft safety and operational procedures.

The flight nurse is usually required to update the receiving staff on the patient’s condition once the aircraft lands and the patient is safely transported to a medical care facility. The nurse is also required to share any medical issues that occurred during the flight or any atmospheric anomalies that may have affected the patient’s condition. All of the patient’s records and documents are usually turned over to the new doctors and nurses.

If the flight nurse works for an airline, he will be expected to restock any medications or supplies that were used during the flight. In order to prepare for the next flight, he is usually expected to clean and sterilize equipment. Any equipment issues must typically be resolved before the next medical flight can be scheduled.

A successful flight nurse is expected to be fearless in the air and to be able to maintain physical and mental stability while caring for his patient. The nurse’s ability to use in-flight communication networks to receive instructions from ground sources is critical. A flight nurse’s calm and supportive demeanor is also a valuable asset.

This position has the same basic educational requirements as a registered nurse. To be considered for the position, you must have a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a valid nursing license. A common requirement is additional training in aircraft medical care. It is strongly preferred that you have prior experience as a registered nurse in critical or emergency care.
