What is a Kennel Assistant?

A kennel assistant is someone who works in a boarding kennel for cats or dogs. A boarding kennel is a facility where owners can board their dogs, cats, or other domestic pets while they are away from home. Kennel assistants also work in animal shelters, veterinarian’s offices, and other places where large groups of animals are housed in kennels.

A kennel assistant’s job is to help with the animals’ care. While many people who work in kennels do not have formal training in animal care and are not licensed veterinarians, many people who work in kennels love animals and become familiar with the steps required to care for animals in a positive manner. In fact, the majority of people who work in this field receive extensive on-the-job training in how to interact positively with animals.

A kennel assistant’s job description varies depending on the type of kennel where he or she works. Some boarding facilities for private owners, as well as some animal shelters and rescues, offer a “cage-free kennel.” In a cage-free kennel, the assistant is responsible for maintaining order and ensuring that no problems arise between the animals.

Animals are kept in cages in standard kennels. An assistant may be called upon to walk an animal in these types of kennels in order to provide exercise and a break from its cage. In this setting, a kennel assistant may also be responsible for cleaning the cage of animal waste on a regular basis.

For a variety of reasons, many pet owners must temporarily confine their animals in a kennel. If a pet owner goes on vacation, for example, he may not be able to bring his dog with him. In this case, he may choose to board his dog at a kennel staffed by animal care professionals.

A kennel assistant may be needed in these types of private kennels or boarding facilities to meet the needs of the individual owner. Some pet owners, for example, feed their animals a special diet. This special diet for the appropriate pet may require assistance from the assistant to the owner or primary caregiver.

A kennel assistant should, in general, enjoy working with animals. While no formal education is required, kennel assistants with prior experience caring for animals or a degree in a related field may have an easier time finding work. Kennel assistants should also expect to work evening, weekend, or holiday hours, as many pet owners require care during these times.
