A laser hair brush is sometimes used in the treatment of thinning hair and hair loss. Unlike regular hair brushes, it works by applying light energy to the scalp with the intention of stimulating the cells. When laser light is applied to the scalp, it assists the normal chemical processes in the cells of the soft tissue. This process, called photobiostimulation, enhances the cells’ ability to absorb nutrients and excrete waste more quickly. Some studies have shown that low level laser therapy may be a solution to the problems of hair loss and thinning hair.
The cost of a laser hair brush can vary depending on the manufacturer. Laser light and LED light are both generally available in the same unit. Using a laser hair brush as a treatment for thinning hair has been presented as cost-effective and safe. Studies have shown that some males with Androgenetic Alopecia, or male pattern baldness, reported hair regrowth while using these products, as compared to control groups using a placebo. Favorable results have also been reported by some users of this device.
A laser comb is similar to a laser hair brush and typically contains both laser light and LED light as well. Some models offer a vibrating massage to further stimulate the cells of the scalp. It typically can take up to one year before users see results from a laser hair brush or laser comb, making patience a necessary virtue when selecting this type of device. To maintain any hair regrowth, the device must be used indefinitely.
In January 2007, the HairMax LaserComb became only the third product cleared by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to treat male pattern baldness. The device joined an over-the-counter topical ointment called minoxidil and the prescription drug finasteride as options cleared by the FDA. While hair restoration surgery often leaves permanent scarring, reports have shown no serious adverse effects attributable to the laser comb. Likewise, common sexual side effects associated with taking finasteride are not correlated with use of the laser comb or similar devices.
Both the laser hair brush and the laser comb are available without a prescription. Each of these devices is approximately the same size as an ordinary hair brush. For maximum portability and ease of use, they are often cordless and rechargeable. Recommended usage is 10-15 minutes three times per week for optimal results. These devices can be used alone or in conjunction with the other hair restoration methods of surgery, topical minoxidil, and finasteride.
