What is a Mattifying Moisturizer?

Mattifying moisturizer is a facial moisturizing product intended to prevent the appearance of oil, and give skin a smooth, matte look. Many people with oily or acne-prone skin find that their faces appear shiny within a few hours of washing it and applying makeup; mattifying moisturizer can help to prevent this problem. Some mattifying moisturizers also include ingredients that may help to treat acne.

A mattifying moisturizer will generally always be oil-free. It is usually designed to restore a natural moisture balance to skin as well as to minimize the appearance of pores. This type of moisturizer may also contain antioxidants such as vitamin C or E to help prevent damage to the skin and renew its appearance. It may also include acne medications such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to help clear up blemishes and prevent new ones from forming.

Mattifying moisturizer is an excellent base for makeup, because it creates a smooth, even surface on which to apply concealer and foundation. Makeup does not tend to stick very well to oily skin, which often necessitates reapplication throughout the day. By using mattifying moisturizer, however, makeup can last all day long because skin does not get oily.

Some mattifying moisturizers contain sunscreen as well, typically around SPF 15. Sunscreen is important to wear every day, to prevent sun damage to the skin. This can lead to wrinkles, age spots, or even skin cancer.

In general, mattifying moisturizer should only be worn in the daytime, and a different moisturizer should be worn while sleeping. Those with oily skin should wash their faces twice a day, generally in the morning and before bed, and no more than that. Washing the face too often can actually cause the overproduction of oil, which is exactly what one is generally trying to avoid. Moisturizers worn at night are generally slightly heavier, and contain more moisturizing and antioxidant ingredients, though there are lighter nighttime moisturizers designed for those with oily or acne-prone skin as well.

Mattifying moisturizer may be found in most drugstores or ordered online. It may be slightly more expensive than a standard facial moisturizer because it functions as a makeup base as well. Many people with oily skin are very happy with this product; however, people with dry skin will generally not need to use this type of moisturizer, and may instead only need a regular moisturizer underneath any foundation or concealer.
