Many of the materials used to make the mouthpiece are also used to make the rest of the instrument. As previously mentioned, these materials include plastic resins, metal, wood, and ivory. Softer rubber can also be used to make mouthpieces.
Some musicians believe that the mouthpiece is what distinguishes a clarinet’s tone. A metal mouthpiece, for example, could change the sound that comes out of the instrument, making it too nasal for some musicians. In general, musicians devote a significant amount of time and effort to selecting mouthpieces that can be used with any instrument if they are compatible.
Many of the metal clarinet models currently on the market are the subject of heated debate about their worth and utility. Some argue that these instruments have low online auction values because they are of poor quality. Others continue to collect metal clarinets, either for musical purposes or as collectibles.
