What is a Pomeranian?

A Pomeranian is a small breed of dog with a thick, fluffy coat and a long, narrow face. Otherwise known as a Pom or dwarf Spitz, this is a lapdog that enjoys bonding with its owner and cuddling. The Pomeranian can make a good companion dog and is typically loyal and devoted to its owner, rarely longing to stray from home.

This breed comes in a variety of colors, including black, white and tan, or a combination of two or more colors. The dog’s long fur needs to be groomed regularly because it has a tendency to get matted. These types of dogs are known to be quite vocal at times and are typically prone to barking. This is also a breed that sheds heavily, losing hair on an average of twice per year.

A generally hearty breed, the Pom should provide companionship for 12 to 15 years or beyond. They occasionally are prone to health issues, however, and this could involve problems with the teeth and gums. For this reason, veterinarians suggest these dogs have routine dental care and cleaning.

These are lively dogs that enjoy being active, although they are also well-suited to apartment living. The Pom typically does not require extensive exercise and generally does well with short bouts of playtime and walks. Whether the owner lives in a large house or small apartment, some type of daily activity is recommended for the Pom.

Deriving its name from the location of Pomerania, which is now located in eastern Germany, the Pomeranian is a direct descendant of the Spitz family. This breed had been bred down over generations to become the small toy-size it is now. The Pomeranian breed is also popular in dog shows.

Another lesser-known fact about the Pom is that the breed is often used as a service dog. Considered highly intelligent, Poms are often astute and perceptive to their environment. They are often used in therapeutic healing and have also been known to assist in missions such as seeking out missing persons. The hearing of the Pomeranian is especially sensitive, and this has aided the breed in helping the hearing-impaired manage their daily activities.

The Pomeranian has been associated with and owned by famous historical figures, including Queen Victoria of England, German composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Italian artist Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni. In fact, the world-famous painting of the Sistine Chapel was completed as Michelangelo posed his pet Pom next to him. Many celebrities own this breed of dog as well.
