What is a Vibraphone? - Spiegato

What is a Vibraphone?

A vibraphone, also known as vibes or vibraharp, is a percussion instrument that belongs to the idiophone family of instruments. Idiophones are instruments that produce sound vibrating the instrument’s entire body. Triangles and cymbals are two other idiophones.

The vibraphone belongs to a group of idiophones that are played with mallets. The xylophone, marimba, glockenspiel, chimes or tubular bells, crotales or antique cymbals, and steel drums are examples of mallet instruments.

The vibraphone, like the glockenspiel, is made up of metal bars. This sets it apart from the marimba and xylophone, which both have wooden bars. The vibraphone is also distinguished its vibrato or tremolo, which is generated a series of electric fans mounted on top of the resonator tubes. The vibrato’s speed is controlled the motor’s speed. As you may have guessed, the vibrato feature is what gives the vibraphone its name.

A typical vibraphone has a three-octave range starting on F below middle C, a two-and-a-half-octave range starting on middle C, or a three-and-a-half-octave range starting on F below middle C. The vibraphone’s bars are arranged with the lowest pitches to the left of the player.

A variety of mallets are commonly used to play the vibraphone. Rubber mallets, as well as hard and medium cord mallets, are used. Wire brushes can be used to render glissandos on the vibraphone, and yarn mallets can be used for soft passages.

The following are two less common vibraphone techniques: The term “dead stroking” or “dead sticking” refers to striking a vibraphone bar and then leaving the mallet resting there, rather than lifting it immediately to allow the bar to vibrate. As a result, the staccato is muffled. Another option is to use a cello or contrabass bow to play the vibraphone bars’ ends.

The vibraphone is a musical instrument that can be found in jazz, band, and orchestral ensembles, and it is used for both backing up and soloing. Roy Ayers, Milt Jackson, Gary Burton, Red Norvo, Cal Tjader, and Lionel Hampton are all famous vibraphonists.
