What is Cum Laude?

Cum laude is a Latin term that translates to “with praise.” It is the lowest of three Latin honors that are usually given to students at graduation. These awards are most common in American universities, but they can be found at all levels of education all over the world. Much of what it takes to graduate with a cum laude depends on school policy — different institutions have different rules about what qualifies a student to receive the award — but grade point average is almost always a deciding factor.

Latin Honors Hierarchy

Although not all schools award Latin honors, those that do usually follow a three-tiered system of “levels” or “ranks.” Cum laude comes first, and it is given to students who have demonstrated exceptional ability over a long period of time. Following that is magna cum laude, which means “with great honor,” and summa cum laude, which means “with highest honor.” It’s uncommon to find one of these awards without the other two, as they’re usually given in tandem as a ranking system.

How to Make Money

There is no universal rubric or set of guidelines that defines what it takes to earn a Latin honor, and the rules can differ greatly from school to school. The award may be given automatically based on class rank or cumulative grade point average, or it may be something that students must apply for prior to graduation. Those who want to graduate “with honors” or higher at some schools must complete a special honors track, take honors exams, or attend exclusive, usually more difficult seminars or classes.

There’s also no way of knowing whether or not a school will offer Latin honors at all. Most undergraduate institutions do, but there is rarely a compelling reason for them to. Honors are also used as a ranking system in some graduate schools, particularly law and medical programs. The awards are uncommon at the high school level, but they do exist. Students who want to learn more about their school’s graduation honors should speak with faculty members or other academic leaders for clarification and guidance.

Elements that aren’t related to school

In order to qualify, institutions may also require students to obtain letters of recommendation from faculty members, advisers, or peers. Community service and extracurricular activities may also be considered, and students have been known to write reflective essays or petitions explaining why they are particularly well-suited for honors. In these situations, a committee or board of faculty and administrators usually meets to decide who will receive honors and at what rank.

The Award is Announced

The cum laude distinction is almost always announced at graduation or in the days leading up to the ceremony, as it is with all Latin honors. To distinguish themselves, honorees may wear special sashes or cords over their gowns, and the honor is usually announced as their names are read. “Cum laude” is usually printed on the diploma itself, and it is also customary to mention it in the graduation program.

Consequences Outside of the Classroom

The honor and prestige that comes with receiving the award usually lasts well beyond graduation. Students who receive it can, and frequently do, include it on their resumes and job applications. Prospective employers often give preference to people who have received this honor, as it speaks to the person’s overall character indicating that they can achieve a high standard while juggling a variety of competing demands. Graduating cum laude may also open the door to future membership in honor societies or elite professional organizations.
