What is Histaminum?

Histaminum, also known by its complete name, histaminum hydrochloricum, is a popular homeopathic treatment for allergies, insect bites, and rashes. It works by fighting and reducing the number of histamines in the body to relieve symptoms, such as sneezing, congestion, itching, and burning. It is the homeopathic equivalent of an antihistamine. Although it is quite popular in homeopathic medicine, research has not been completed to indicate whether it actually works to alleviate allergy symptoms.

Typically, histaminum is made from purified chemicals, called histidines, that are collected and synthesized from living substances, such as plants. It was first identified in 1910 in soy bean oil. When it is collected and purified, it forms white crystals. These crystals are then converted to pellets for homeopathic use.

Generally, histaminum works to reduce the symptoms related to allergic reactions. The allergic reactions can be due to an airborne allergen, a food allergy, a contact allergy, or an insect sting or bite. Homeopathic medicine practitioners consider it to be an effective way to help people open their airways, reducing nasal congestions and bronchial asthma due to allergens. If a food allergen is the culprit, it may be used to reduce rashes, gastric discomfort, swelling, and redness. If a person is suffering from contact allergens or insect stings, histaminum may relieve itching, burning and swelling on the skin, eczema, and hives.

In most cases, histaminum can be purchased at a homeopathic pharmacy, health food store, or online. It is generally sold in the form of a pellet, but a homeopathic medicine practitioner can typically recommend the proper dosage. Usually, if it is being used as a first aid device, it may be administered more frequently. If it is being used to treat general allergies, it may be used a few times a day. It may be used prior to allergen exposure, as a preventative measure as well.

Many homeopathic practitioners believe that histaminum is absorbed by the digestive track. As a result, some practitioners may recommend that their patients receive it intravenously or through muscle injections. Although it may be absorbed by the body more effectively by injection, most people prefer to use it in pellet or tablet form.

As with any homeopathic remedy, it is best to consult an experienced practitioner or medical provider before using histaminum. Specifically, women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should ask their doctors whether this remedy is safe for them. It has not yet been well evaluated for safety nor researched for effectiveness.
