What is a Stage Truss?

A stage truss is a structural component of a stage that supports lighting, screens, and other accessories. Stage trusses can be fixed in place, such as in a theater with a suspended trusswork system, or they can be moved around. Stage trusses are used in a variety of settings, ranging from public parks to opera houses, and they are built by a variety of companies, some of which are capable of fabricating custom trusses for specific applications.

A stage truss is typically a box truss that can be welded or bolted to other trusses to create a stand, or it can be designed to be suspended from rigging in a performance venue. Lighting instruments, pulleys for moving performers or scenery, special effects devices like bubble makers, and monitors or screens can all be attached to the structural elements of the stage truss. From the wiring associated with individual lights on a stage truss to microphone cord, stage trusses are frequently used to support the extensive wiring and cabling used in performance.

Stage trusses, also known as lighting racks, are sometimes visible during a performance. People who have attended outdoor concerts may have noticed stage trusses above and along the sides of the stage, and patrons of indoor venues may also be able to see the trusses due to the design of the venue. To reduce the risk of an accident caused by a falling or improperly secured truss, these devices are usually installed with redundant safety precautions. Because stage trusses may have to support a significant amount of weight, safety is critical during installation.

Rentals of portable truss systems are frequently available. Setting up lighting racks at an outdoor party, supporting a tent for a backyard wedding, or providing structural support for a trade show booth are all tasks that a portable stage truss can help with. Companies that specialize in events frequently stock a number of portable trusses and handle the installation on site. Typically, the truss will have a load rating that should be carefully noted.

Companies that manufacture theatrical equipment can be good sources for new and used trusses for people and organizations who have a regular need for a stage truss. Used trusses are frequently a good choice because they are less expensive than new trusses and have typically been well maintained, resulting in good condition. If a custom size or configuration is required, the manufacturer may charge an additional fee for custom fabrication, particularly if none of the manufacturer’s standard components will fit.
