What is a Body Double?

Body doubles are professionals who stand in for actors while a scene is being filmed for a television or film production. When the distance, angle, and lighting are set up correctly, the body double usually bears enough physical resemblance to the performer that it is impossible to tell the difference. When a scene calls for action that could be dangerous for a headlining performer, or when the performer’s appearance is only incidental to the scene, doubles may be used.

A body double does not have to have a striking facial resemblance to the performer for the most part. However, the overall skin tone, body type, height, and hair color are frequently thought to be crucial in achieving the desired effect. The double is frequently filmed from behind or at a distance, making it nearly impossible for the audience to tell whether the scene features the performer or the double.

A body double was especially useful in the early days of television in scenes where the performer was having a conversation with a twin or other character who was supposed to be identical in appearance. During the golden age of television, it was common to have the performer face the camera while the double was only seen from the back. This arrangement would allow a single actor to provide voice overs for both characters, which could then be dubbed in after the scenes were shot and edited.

The stunt double is one of the most common types of body double. This type of movie double is used for scenes that require a lot of physical exertion and are potentially dangerous. Because many leading actors and actresses are well compensated, having to halt production when a major actor or actress is injured on set can be extremely costly. When the script calls for car chases, an escape from a burning building, or any other physical action, the stunt double takes over to protect the star from injury. Stunt doubles are usually well-trained in how to perform various actions with the least amount of risk of injury in order to protect themselves.

The Hollywood body double, like actors and actresses, is usually a member of a union and is paid at least a daily minimum wage known as scale. Television shows may hire a body double for the duration of the show or on an as-needed basis.
