Roostabout jobs are entry-level, unskilled or semi-skilled manual jobs on an oil rig. Roughnecks, floorhands, and leasehands are all terms used to describe roughnecks. An oil rig crew may have two or three roustabouts who are expected to do all of the grunt work on the rig.
Entry-level roustabout jobs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Cleaning decks, scraping away rust, and painting the oil rig are examples of routine oil jobs, as is moving supplies, machinery, and equipment from one location to another. Digging trenches and cleaning drains are examples of roustabout work.
Cleaning and lubricating threads, welding, and assembling or repairing oil rig equipment are all examples of routine jobs. Roustabouts may be needed to perform routine maintenance and assist with the collection and testing of drilling samples. They have the ability to operate air, water, and mud pumps.
Attaching and checking water and air hoses, as well as power supply cables, are among the other arduous tasks. Concrete can be mixed and poured by rogues. They must ensure that no safety hazards are present, and they must be willing to perform any oil rig task that is assigned to them.
Roustabout oil rig jobs are physically demanding, can be dangerous, and have long shifts. Roustabouts may be required to work up to 10 or 12 hours per day, seven days a week. They work primarily outside, in all types of weather.
Strong, energetic people with plenty of stamina and a positive attitude are required for the job. It’s critical to have a strong work ethic, be a quick learner, and be able to take and follow directions. Experienced roustabouts can eventually work their way up the ladder to crew positions on an oil rig.
There are a lot of job openings for roustabouts. For roustabout jobs, a college diploma is not required, but some oil companies may require a high school diploma. Having a Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training (BOSIET) or Helicopter Survival Course (HUET) certificate is a definite plus, as is experience with mechanical and manual work.
A medical certificate stating that you are in good physical condition is required. People with drug or alcohol problems will not be considered due to the demanding nature of the job. Many businesses may conduct random drug tests to ensure that their employees are drug-free.
Before being placed on an oil rig, selected roustabouts usually go through two or three weeks of roustabout job training. Roustabouts can be housed and fed on the job site or close by. They earn a lot of money and get a lot of perks.
