How can I Become an Animal Trainer?

An animal trainer works with a variety of animals to train them to perform specific tasks. Some work with seeing eye dogs and other animals that assist people with disabilities; some train dogs to work for law enforcement agencies or as personal protection; some work with animals at theme parks and zoos; and some train house pets to behave with manners and follow owner rules in the home. The first requirement for an animal trainer, regardless of field, is a love and respect for all animals.

The ability to train animals is the next requirement for an animal trainer. These can be obtained in a variety of ways. Horses, dogs, and marine animals are the three most commonly trained animals. The most schooling and education will be required of an animal trainer who works with marine animals. A bachelor’s degree in marine biology, animal science, or a related major is usually required to work for an aquatic theme park or zoo. To gain experience, look for programs that offer internships or volunteer at zoos and animal parks.

Working on ranches or farms is a great way to learn about horse training. An entry level position cleaning stalls, grooming, and taking care of equipment is a good first step for those who are interested in the field but lack experience. It’s critical to learn all aspects of horse care, and trainers are more likely to take on a novice who has demonstrated a passion for the sport. Volunteer at stables and therapeutic riding centers if no jobs are available. Observe the trainers and educate yourself as much as possible.

Dog training is big business, and there are a lot of “K9 academies” and training courses to choose from, but you should proceed with caution. Before enrolling in a training school, learn about dog training techniques and dog care. Attend training seminars to get a feel for the methods of training that feel right, and stay away from schools that use abusive treatments and rough handling to keep the dogs under control. Dog training books abound in the public library.

Taking animal care courses can also help an animal trainer get a foot in the door. Many community colleges and private institutions offer veterinary technician programs that provide an excellent introduction to the world of pet care. Graduates can work for veterinarians or enter the animal training industry with their education and experience.
