Inkjet and laser printers qualify as a digital press because they use a computer to print. Getting a job as a digital press operator differs from getting a job as an offset printer or any other type of printing machine operator because computer skills are more important in this industry than in any other. This job necessitates computer skills, as well as adaptability and repair abilities. There are training programs for those who want to work as a digital press operator, but experience is valued more than a college diploma.
A digital press operator, unlike an offset press operator, must be able to operate a computer. Traditional print machines require operators to manually mix inks, ensure that plate pressure is optimal for printing, and correct a variety of other printing machine-related issues. Digital presses require the operator to use the computer to check light or darkness settings, select finishing and double-sided printing, and perform a variety of other tasks. Working as a digital press operator is, in many ways, more about working with the computer than it is about working with the printer.
While the majority of a digital press operator’s work is done on a computer, there will be times when they must interact directly with the printing machine. When the digital printer’s platen glass is used instead of an image from the computer, this is typically done with a copying job. This job will require knowledge of how to work with the settings on a digital printer.
Aside from being able to use a computer, certain skills are required to work as a digital press operator. Adaptability is still required with digital printing, even though the computer does a lot of the work. Most print jobs will be unique, requiring the operator to set up each job separately and pay special attention to each one. Repair skills, such as knowing how to remove stray bits of paper or replacing or repairing a fuser unit, can also assist a person in becoming a digital press operator because the company will spend less money on repairs.
Because experience in this field is valued more than a degree, a college degree is rarely required to become a digital press operator. While this is true, having a degree in digital printing machines will help you get the job and advance because it demonstrates that you are passionate about the job and know how to operate the machines and process print orders. Apprenticing is an option if obtaining a degree or certificate in digital printing is not possible.
