Topics for informative essays should be engaging, specific, and logical. The goal of an informative essay is to inform the reader about a topic in a concise and straightforward manner. During high school and college, most students are required to write at least a few informative essays. It can be difficult to come up with good informative essay topics, but doing so is crucial because a bad topic can ruin even the best-written essay. The writer makes the task of writing the essay more difficult choosing a bad topic, and the reader’s likelihood of finding the essay interesting or educational is reduced.
A writer who selects informative essay topics that he enjoys is much more likely to write engaging essays than one who selects topics at random. Because the writer is interested in the subject, he or she will engage with it at a much deeper level, resulting in a more thorough and well-researched paper. Furthermore, topics that pique the writer’s interest are much more likely to pique the reader’s interest. Attempting to write a five- or six-page essay on existentialism will almost certainly do the topic a disservice; a better essay would explain one specific aspect of or argument about existentialism.
Topics for informative essays should also be based on facts. Opinion essays, while valid and interesting in some cases, are not objectively supported and will not be accepted as informative in the majority of cases. A writer who chooses a topic that can be easily supported will be able to cite proven facts in his essay, giving it more credibility. It is sometimes best to choose informative essay topics about which one has no personal convictions, especially for new writers. When one has strong feelings about a topic, it can be difficult to keep an essay objectively grounded in facts.
