What are Short Courses?

Short courses are a series of educational classes typically attended by adults in order to receive specialized training in a short amount of time. These types of classes are commonly referred to as “short courses” in the United Kingdom and Australia. “Short courses” are more commonly referred to as “condensed courses” in the United States. These courses are usually taken outside of the framework of a degree program, and they may even be offered by non-accredited institutions.

Short courses are unique in that they can be taken voluntarily for personal growth and edification, professional skill improvement, or the development of a new skill for use in the workplace. Someone might, for example, decide to take a short course in pottery or archery just to try out a new hobby. On the other hand, in order to be more productive at work, someone might decide to take a short course in a specific type of computer program.

Alternatively, someone may choose to enroll in a short course that will assist them in developing a skill that will allow them to transition into a completely new career. Someone interested in working in the fitness industry, for example, could enroll in a fitness instruction course. Short courses that are meant to be used as credentials for a new career should almost always be taken at an accredited institution.

Short courses are sometimes paid for by employers. For example, if a valued employee wishes to take foreign language courses in order to better serve clients or customers, the employer may cover the cost of tuition because the skills learned will directly benefit the company. Tuition reimbursement information is usually found in company policy handbooks or employee handbooks.

Short courses are sometimes taken to improve one’s skills before starting a new job search. This is especially important if a person’s field uses a new type of technology with which he should become more familiar before looking for a new job. Having additional skills can help you stand out in the interview process and increase your chances of landing the job. Additionally, having additional skills can often help people increase their salaries if their skills are valued by their current or potential employers.
