What is a Mnemonist?

A mnemonist is a person with an exceptional memory. Using a variety of techniques, such a person can memorize extremely large sets of data. While having a good memory may appear to be more of a party trick than anything else, some people can make a career out of it. Several studies on mnemonists have been conducted in order to learn more about how their brains work, with the goal of better understanding memory and possibly identifying areas for further research that could be used to help people with memory problems.

Whether a mnemonist is born or made is a point of contention. Some people believe that incredible memorization abilities are innate and have something to do with the way the brain is wired. Studies on groups like people with autism have backed up this theory, showing that functional differences in brain function are linked to improved memory. Even if they are unable to perform feats such as reciting Pi to 4,000 digits, some people with autism are mnemonists or have unusually good memories.

Others believe that memory can be trained, and that while some people do have advantages built into their brains, it is possible to develop a mnemonist. Furthermore, someone with a strong memory may be able to teach others how to memorize. Others combine several different approaches to memorization, offering classes and workshops for people who want to improve their memories. Some have developed their own techniques, while others rely on existing techniques.

Other mnemonists have chosen to perform with their memories. For some, setting world records is a hobby, while others demonstrate their recall skills in front of crowds. Several people with exceptional memories have even written books about their experiences and perspectives on the world, including instructional books for developing mnemonics programs.

Different areas of the brain appear to activate when retrieving and storing memories, depending on the type of memory and the individual mnemonist, according to brain imaging studies on mnemonists. Various memory-enhancing techniques can also activate different parts of the brain, such as when people use the method of loci, which involves using guided imagery to reinforce a memory and make it easier to recall.
