What is an MBA?

A master’s degree in business administration (MBA) is offered by a number of accredited universities around the world. Entrepreneurial students looking to gain an advantage in the business world in a variety of markets and corporations seek out this degree. The program is designed to improve a person’s skills in a variety of business areas, giving them a broad understanding as well as sharp abilities. Some of the required courses in an MBA curriculum include finance, leadership, organizational behavior, marketing, management, government, and economics. Elective courses allow students to focus on specific skills, such as a concentration in the healthcare industry.

In the United States, an MBA takes two to three years to complete after completing a bachelor’s degree. In most European countries, the time allotted to complete this degree is slightly shorter. Although it is not usually required to have a secondary degree to be accepted into a program, many students begin their academic careers with an MBA in mind. Many schools offer MBA programs alongside other academic majors, while others specialize in business.

Although each university’s admissions requirements vary, in general, before a person is accepted into an MBA program, he or she must perform well on the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). Work experience in business administration, participation in extracurricular activities and community service, and a basic understanding of business terminology are all common requirements.

Many schools offer special programs that differ slightly from the typical curriculum for people who have already started their careers in business, such as upwardly mobile executives who want to earn an MBA. The Executive MBA is a part-time program for business professionals with extensive experience. Students in this program have the opportunity to share their practical business experience with others while also applying their academic work immediately and directly to their careers.
