What is Forensic Photography? - Spiegato

What is Forensic Photography?

Crime scene photography is another term for forensic photography. Investigators and prosecutors require precise images of various aspects of the crime scene. Before the body is taken to the morgue, the crime scene photographer may be asked to photograph the homicide victim. In other cases, the forensic photographer might be asked to photograph shell casings, blood stains, broken glass, or other items.

People with a keen eye for detail and a high level of precision in their work will be drawn to forensic photography jobs. Each image must be meticulously prepared so that investigators have a clear image to work with. To provide an accurate record of the evidence discovered at the crime scene, the photographer is frequently asked to photograph the same item from various angles. If the case goes to trial, the images captured the forensic photographer may be used as evidence in court.

The photographer must be well-versed in his or her gear, which includes the camera and flash. To provide clear images for investigators, special lighting may be required. The photographer must also understand scale so that the size of the object can be accurately represented in the photographs.

The forensic photographer is not always tasked with capturing images of a deceased person or inanimate objects. Photographic evidence of a person’s injuries may be used as part of a criminal prosecution in the case of someone who has been assaulted. The photographer must be able to capture the images that will be used as evidence while also showing empathy for the victim.

Many of the people who work in the field of forensic photography began their careers as police officers or crime scene investigators. This knowledge will aid them in remaining calm when it comes time to testify in court. After gaining some practical experience, they can enroll in a forensic photography course at a college or university. Others begin their careers as forensic photographers working in a crime lab to gain experience and the contacts necessary to be hired for one of these positions.

Forensic photographers may also work for firms that offer consulting services to law firms, insurance companies, or fire departments’ arson investigation divisions. Military service may also provide employment opportunities. People working in the field of forensic photography can be found wherever there is a need for photographic records for legal purposes.
