Candidates must pass the Red Cross lifeguard test in order to become a Red Cross lifeguard. This test has four parts: a swimming test, a written test, a timed test, and a skills demonstration test. In order to become a Red Cross lifeguard, each segment must be completed with ease.
Applicants must be at least 15 years old in order to take the Red Cross lifeguard test. Additionally, all candidates must register for the test at a Red Cross location near them. Each applicant will be required to complete various training sessions after registering for the test. These sessions cover a variety of techniques and life-saving procedures that are essential for lifeguards. These courses are not free, despite the fact that they are required. In addition to the test fee, contacting a local Red Cross chapter will help determine the cost of Red Cross lifeguard courses.
All candidates must also pass a timed test administered a Red Cross official in addition to the various portions of the Red Cross lifeguard test. A surface dive, a simulated rescue task, and a 50 meter (45.72 yard) swim are all part of this test. This is a fairly difficult test that necessitates a good deal of stamina and skill.
The swimming portion of the lifeguard test is the most important because lifeguards must be strong swimmers. Each swimming section of the test, including a basic breaststroke, a 300 yard (274 meter) continuous swim, and a freestyle segment, must be completed all potential lifeguards. To put it another way, all Red Cross lifeguards must be able to swim for long periods of time without tiring.
Following the swimming section, there is a written examination. This section contains questions about medical safety and prevention. All candidates will receive a written test guide from the Red Cross, which should be thoroughly read and understood before attempting to complete the written portion of the exam, as all candidates must pass the written portion with an 80 percent or higher score.
Candidates must also be able to demonstrate their newly acquired abilities in front of a judge. Basic cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills, first aid skills, and other life-saving skills will be tested. Those who successfully complete the Red Cross lifeguard test are awarded the Red Cross lifeguard certification.
