Because of the technical and safety aspects of being an electric lineman, proper training is critical. Linemen are typically found working outside, installing and maintaining power, phone, cable, and Internet lines. Lineman training is available at a number of locations across the United States (U.S.). Some companies will even pay for apprentices to attend their preferred training school.
Before applying for lineman training, there are a few things to keep in mind. This is not a free course. If money is an issue, some people may be eligible for financial aid from the school or the government; they may also be eligible for research scholarships or student loans. Linemen must be in top physical shape. Many schools will not accept students who are unable to pass a physical examination.
Lineman training typically requires a high school diploma or a General Educational Development (GED) certificate. Math skills are also required for lineman training. Although the training will teach and refresh some fundamentals, some mathematical reasoning will be required.
Lineman training is available at a variety of locations across the United States, so finding one will depend on where you want to train. Examine the local training facilities and make a decision based on the location, cost, and programs offered. Many training schools offer four-month courses with classes held Monday through Friday during the day. For those who already have a day job, this can be a problem. Part-time programs are hard to come by.
When looking into training centers, make sure they have all of the necessary safety certifications and training. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requires certification (OSHA). Throughout a lineman’s professional career, additional OSHA certifications will be required. Some first aid and flagger training is also required.
Obtaining a commercial driver’s license is another area where many lineman training centers can help (CDL). A power truck is frequently driven to and from sites as an electrical lineman, so having a CDL before applying for a job will show employers that the applicant is serious about the position. It may also result in a pay raise for some linemen.
On a daily basis, electrical linemen face dangerous situations. The elements can be challenging, and skilled performance is required at all times. The right lineman training will not only help a person mentally and physically prepare for the job, but it will also help him prepare for the job search.
