Geophysicists are scientists who study the physical processes that take place inside the Earth or in the atmosphere. Geodesists also study how gravity and the rotation of the Earth affect tidal changes and glacial movement.
Physical phenomena such as earthquakes, volcanoes, climate change, and deep ocean vents are of interest to geodynamics scientists. Seismologists use sophisticated equipment to track the movements and properties of tectonic plates in order to explain and predict earthquakes. Volcanologists monitor the internal temperature and stability of volcanically active areas. To better understand weather patterns, other geodynamics experts study electrical activity and cloud formation.
Geomagnetism researchers look into how and why the magnetic field changes over time. Geomagnetism experts, like seismologists, use a variety of sophisticated scales and measuring tools to determine accurate readings of the Earth’s magnetic field’s direction and strength. By studying fossils, rocks, and sediments that contain preserved physical markers of past magnetic orientations, researchers can figure out how magnetism changes, and sometimes completely reverses.
Scientists who specialize in analyzing the physical makeup of specific geographic regions hold some geophysicist jobs. A construction company employee assists engineers in determining the stability of a site in order to determine whether it is safe to construct a dam, highway, or tunnel. Geophysics consultants are frequently used mining and drilling companies to locate new sources of oil and minerals, both on land and beneath the ocean’s surface.
Most geophysicist jobs require a bachelor’s degree as a minimum requirement. Bachelor’s degree holders in geology, geography, or physics are usually qualified to work as research assistants at universities or consultants for construction, mining, and drilling companies. A person with an advanced degree in geophysics and several years of experience in the field is typically required to conduct independent studies.
