A talent buyer is someone who hires artists for a variety of functions and events. This position requires a large network of contacts throughout the industry with which she works, including both performers and managers. The buyer must be capable of negotiating deals and drafting contracts for both parties. She must also keep track of performance schedules, keep a consistent budget, and frequently serve as a liaison between the host venue and the visiting talent.
In most cases, the talent buyer will have a network of resources in the artistic community from which she can draw to fill vacancies. Relationships with performers, agents, and managers, as well as other talent buyers already working in a specific area, can be part of this network. Some buyers prefer to specialize in a single type of industry booking, such as actors, musicians, or comedians.
This person must also be familiar with the legal aspects of the industry. Contracts between the employing company and the artistic talent she is bringing into the venue are frequently requested of the talent buyer. She may also be permitted to negotiate pricing and perks between the venue and the talent in order to reach a mutually beneficial agreement.
A talent buyer can be hired by any type of company to book different acts for a venue. This type of position could be used by a nightclub to choose different bands and musical acts to entertain customers each night. Multiple people with this skill set are frequently used by a performing arts center to create a season of different events for its patrons, which may include musical groups or live theater troupes, among other things.

Employers frequently assign a budget to the buyer, which she must adhere to for each performance or season. Most buyers are required to be present at the venue to oversee each visiting artist’s set up and tear down. A basic understanding of technical aspects of show production, such as lighting and sound rigging, can benefit the buyer. This also allows visiting talent to contact the buyer if any issues arise prior to a performance that require special attention.
