An information technology (IT) assistant is in charge of providing computer users with general information technology services and direct support. A person with this job may have a wide range of daily responsibilities. Depending on the needs of the employer, he or she may be required to work unusual hours, such as early morning, overnight, and weekend shifts.
An IT assistant might create support tickets for pending services, monitor networked equipment, perform routine technology maintenance, and research possible technologies for department purchases on a typical day. He or she can also expect to contribute operational policies and organize IT department files. Complex configuration tasks will almost certainly be completed as well, albeit under the supervision of supervisors.
Because of the wide range of support services it provides to other members of the organization, this job may be one of the most hands-on in an IT department. The person’s job description will, in most cases, include responsibilities beyond remote technical support. This person is in charge of many organization-specific user manuals and training seminars, and he or she may be required to write written guidelines for other employees and run workshops.
Finally, an IT assistant serves as a point of contact for the department and the rest of the company. In some cases, the assistant’s responsibilities list may include the term “catch-all.” This means he or she will be asked to complete any IT-related task that is assigned to them, as long as they are capable of doing so correctly.
This job could provide a lot of satisfaction to people who enjoy physically configuring and installing computer systems and network devices. IT assistants are in charge of the majority of computer and local-area network (LAN) hardware installations. These employees are usually in charge of system image maintenance and deployment.
While all of the tasks that IT assistants perform are important, some of them may be less so. They may be tasked with more basic tasks like installing Ethernet wiring, cleaning internal computer components, and replacing printer cartridges. Physical tasks such as bending, lifting, pulling, and carrying objects weighing 60 pounds (27.2 kg) or less are expected of someone in this position.
Because of the variety of tasks that this position entails, it is a fulfilling role for many people. The job necessitates strong interpersonal skills, technical knowledge, effective communication, creative problem solving, and dependable organizational skills. Those who demonstrate potential are frequently promoted within their departments.
