What does an Engineering Technologist do?

An engineering technologist is a person who has been trained to use technology in the field of engineering. This usually entails combining basic math, natural science, and economic principles with current engineering standards. Engineering technology is used to evaluate efficiency, improve design, and solve engineering and manufacturing-related issues. “Engineering technologist” can also be referred to as “applied science technologist,” which refers to the branch of science in which engineering technology is classified.

Typically, someone in this field works under the supervision of a scientist or engineer. A manufacturing or industrial plant, a laboratory, a construction site, or a company’s research and development department could all be examples of the workplace. The person may be exposed to harmful agents such as chemicals or toxins depending on the type of work they do. However, such occurrences are uncommon, and harm can be avoided following proper procedures.

Conducting tests and recording the results, collecting data, and using computer-aided drafting to create technical drawings for product design are all part of the job description. The person may be asked to develop and manufacture products in some cases. Implementing quality control and calculating production costs are two tasks associated with such a business.

A typical engineering technologist’s work entails specialization. Aerospace engineering technologists, for example, are in charge of operating and maintaining tools used to test aircraft and spacecraft, such as wind tunnels, which are structures into which air is blown to simulate the effect on planes. Civil engineering technology is another specialty that involves assisting civil engineers in the construction of structures such as buildings, dams, highways, and bridges. Aerospace, environmental, industrial, and mechanical engineering technology are some of the other specializations available.

Some of the field’s specializations overlap. Electrical and electronics engineering technologists, for example, assist in the design, development, testing, and production of a wide range of electronic products, ranging from digital music players to desktop computers. These tasks are also performed electro-mechanical technologists, but their focus is narrower. Electronic and computer-controlled mechanical systems, such as robotic assembly machines, are specifically associated with them.

A bachelor’s degree in applied science in engineering technology from a four-year college or university is required to work as an engineering technologist. Although the terms “engineering technologist” and “engineering technician” are frequently confused, the latter only requires an associate’s degree. In fact, in some workplaces, this person is in charge of supervising a team of engineering technicians who are responsible for completing specific tasks. Some engineering technicians do go on to become engineering technologists after completing workplace training programs or accumulating years of experience.
