What does an NVQ Assessor do?

People who are completing a National Vocational Qualification (NVQ), which is a work-based qualification awarded in the United Kingdom, are assessed by an NVQ assessor (UK). The NVQ is a qualification that certifies and validates proficiency in a job or work-related activity at various levels. An NVQ can be assessed in more than 1,300 different job areas. Hospitality, healthcare, fitness, education, horticulture, and construction are just a few examples. An NVQ assessor works with someone who is attempting to obtain an NVQ to ensure that he or she is able to meet the requirements.

An NVQ assessor’s working hours are generally fairly flexible, and he or she can and does frequently work from home. One of the assessor’s responsibilities, however, is to visit candidates at their place of business and tutor or assess them in their NVQ studies. An NVQ assessor frequently trains, supports, and assists students with their NVQ courses. Students may study at their place of employment, in college, or during an internship.

In addition, an NVQ assessor is responsible for developing course plans, providing course content, and assisting with course development. Candidates can also contribute to tailoring the courses or NVQ requirements to their own areas of expertise. The assessor must create candidate portfolios and ensure that all notes and documentation are kept in each record. The portfolio, as well as other work-related assignments, are used to evaluate students.

An NVQ assessor also provides useful feedback to candidates, allowing them to improve or make changes based on that feedback if necessary. He or she assists candidates in recognizing skills that they already possess as well as in identifying areas where they need to improve. He or she also assists candidates in demonstrating their abilities, after which he or she assesses their competency based on the demonstration.

A person must obtain an assessor qualification, either A1 or A2, in order to become an NVQ assessor. In addition, the assessor must have prior experience in the area being evaluated. An NVQ assessor in the management field, for example, must have previously worked in management in some capacity.

As specialized skills and training become more important in the UK, NVQs have become more common. Employers are increasingly requiring NVQs as a condition of employment. Higher pay and more promotion opportunities are among the advantages of having an NVQ. Although there is no set time limit, they usually take one to two years to complete.
