A master automotive technician is a highly trained and certified professional who can handle a wide range of vehicle repairs. While auto mechanics may specialize in one or more areas of auto repair, a master automotive technician has typically completed coursework and passed certification testing in each of the United States’ eight recognized specialty areas. A master level technician typically has hands-on experience and can work for an automotive dealer, a specialty repair shop, or as an independent garage proprietor in addition to studying.
Wrenches, hoists, and pliers are common tools of the trade for a master automotive technician, but as car systems have grown in technical complexity, computers and diagnostic machines have been added to the tool inventory. Each car poses its own diagnostic and repair challenges, and computer integration is frequently difficult. Studying automotive technologies in general and gaining experience with computer and electronic systems in a variety of vehicles may become more important in the future.
To earn the title of master automotive technician, you must pass eight exams. The eight exam areas of the ASE tests are engine repair, manual drive train, automatic transmission/transaxle and axles, brakes, suspension and steering, electrical/electronic systems, engine performance, and heating and air conditioning, according to the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). Although passing one or more of these tests can lead to ASE certification, passing all eight sections is required to become a master automotive technician.
Automotive repair job openings are frequently available and advertised, along with the required qualifications. For example, some brake shops are looking for ASE certified brake technicians with experience working on a specific domestic car, while others are looking to fill general engine repair positions. New or inexperienced mechanics frequently work as apprentices in shops while learning the fundamentals of automobile maintenance or upkeep, or by focusing on a single repair area. ASE certification tests can be taken at any point during this career path.
Master automotive technician status can be attained through hard work in the early years of a person’s career or over a long period of time. However, once a certification is obtained, one’s employability may improve. Whether certification is used to compare the skills and experience of multiple candidates for a position in general auto care and repair or in specialized areas, it is typically desirable for employers. Master certification attests to mastery of many nationally recognized areas, as the name implies.
